Misc weekly challenges and projects

Last week's online challenge was to use paint. I created a double-page spread in my art journal.

I used watercolor paints for the background. Then I added texture paster through an alpha stencil (hard to see in photo) and black acrylic paint through a few other stencils. I finished with a few pieces of washi tape, stamped words and a butterfly girl as the focal point.

I saw this technique below for using up scrap strips of papers on YouTube. I glued various paper strips to a larger paper (about 4" x 6") leaving space between each. Then I sewed the edges in black thread for contrast. The first one doesn't have a focal point yet; I added a fussy cut bird and several labels on the second one. These will make great tags or journal cards.

The last technique uses large paint chips as the base. These all came from Lowes but you can find paint chips in different sizes everywhere. I layered several different papers, washi tape, labels and focal points for a pleasing composition and added ribbon to the top of the tags. I haven't yet decided whether to leave the backs as is to show the paint chip labels or to cover with plain paper.

I enjoy using up scraps and items from my stash!

July Vintage Junk Journal Page Swap

July's junk journal page theme is "Americana."

I used an old greeting card which was 5" x 7" (preferred size for these pages) and collaged the front with torn book text and music paper. Then I added a few small pieces of red and blue patterned papers. I cut down a junk mail window envelope to make a pocket and used the flap to attach it to the back side, right edge of the page. This was collaged with more bits of papers (I used mostly scraps from an old Authentique patriotic paper collection).

The tag/journaling card inside the pocket is a digital printable photo. I added a small piece of ticking for the pull tab and a small strip of knotted fabric across the front of the pocket for added texture.

Here is the front of the page under the flip-out pocket.

The backs of the page and the little journaling cards are covered with tea-dyed paper. The slanted pocket was made from the remainder of the original window envelope.

The tag is actually a sturdy clothing tag (I love to reuse those) which I covered with paper and a vintage image.
