Collage Challenge - Weeks 11 & 12

Week 11

Prompts:

1) a child or children (vintage children image)

2) a cleaning product (hand soap)

3) a flower (blue flower)

4) a barcode

5) handwriting (used the base page in the 

planner which had handwriting)

Bonus: something that works as a title for the collage (Janet & Jo nail polish)

Other items I added: blue Bingo card, blue circle collar ad, patterned paper. I used

the color blue to unify the collage.

Week 12 

Prompt:

Do you ever order take-out? Use a take-out menu with other restaurant 

and good images and ephemera to make a collage.

This week was a real challenge for me as we don't do much the-out and I had no menus.

Luckily, there was an ad for Asian Buffet in our weekly grocery ads mailing that had a

menu so I used it and went with an Asian theme. I used some origami patterned papers, a piece of a chopstick package and food images from a magazine.

 

Little Nature Flip-out with four pockets and tags

I created this cute fold-out booklet with four pockets following the YouTube tutorial by Barbara at 49dragonflies here.  If you'd like to make one, check out her video as she gives dimensions and very good directions. This is made with a base of tea-dyed paper, book pages and some fussy-cut images, washi stickers and a few other paper scraps. This is a perfect little project to stick in a larger pocket in a journal.

Misc challenges

 

These are some recent challenges I did for my on line group.

The first was to use alcohol inks in some way. I revisited an old ink lifting technique. An alcohol ink background is created on a non-porous surface and then, when dry, a stamp is inked with Ranger's Alcohol Lift-Ink and stamped on the surface. This is blotted gently with a paper towel and then any excess wiped off. It created a ghost-like image, lifting the ink from the background. Before cleaning the stamp, it can be stamped on another surface and the ink transfers. You can get two images with one technique. I made two cards.

Next is an acetate technique in which an image is captured between two pieces of acetate. This can be a stamped image or you can use a cutout image as I did. For the frame I used two playing cards with matching rectangles cut from the centers. The acetate pieces are sandwiched between and the edges machine-sewed. I inked the cards to grunge them up a bit and added a few tiny little stamped "labels."

This was a swap where we had to make two 24-inch-long faux washi strips with double-sided tape and various papers. I made one with very colorful scraps and one with more neutral, pastel scraps. This was a fun project.

Week 10

Stowe, Vt. where I grew up)

Junk Journal Page for March

This is the 5" x 7" junk journal page I made for the March swap. It has a botanical theme.

The front has a flip-out pocket made with half a page from a book about roses. It is folded in half, leaving a small piece on the right for a hinge. The two sides are glued together to form the pocket and a large circle punched on the front. I collaged scraps of paper inside the circle and added faux stitching with a pen around the outside to frame it. I also added a floral image and butterfly from a book and strips of paper scraps and washi tape. 

This is the tag inside the pocket, made from a guest check. I left the back undecorated for writing space and the front is embellished with scraps of paper, a fussy-cut flower and a label and ticket.

When the pocket is opened, you can see the back which was from the original page and I just decorated it minimally. The base of the journal page is collaged with neutral pages with a partial napkin decoupaged on the left. The belly band is a wide piece of lace.  The larger card insert (on left) is a cut-down paint chip with a scrap of Tim Holtz wallpaper glued to the right side and a tab glued to the left. The smaller card is a playing card which has sewing pattern tissue, a fussy-cut flower and a label glued to the front.

And, lastly, here is the back with plenty of journaling space. I sewed  around the edges and added two scraps of paper to the left side and a small ladybug label wrapped around from the front.

This page is on its way to Missouri where I hope the recipient will enjoy it.

 

Book Page Pocket with collage

I recently made a little pouch from two book pages and lots of collage. I followed a YouTube video by Joie de Fi here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dv8cYl_YyLs&t=955s 

Her instructions are very clear so I won't go into how this is made, but it was fun to do and is very useful for storing lots of bits and pieces. This is approximately 4.5" x 6.5" but could be any size depending on your book pages.

It closes with a simple closure made from a punched circle of card stock attached with a brad.

It's a great way to use up lots of small paper scraps.

Altered Tin Sample for an April Retreat

 I was asked to do the sample for an altered tin project for an upcoming retreat in April. This was originally a design team project for Tim Holtz by Stacy at tatterednestdesigns.com and has been adapted slightly.

Being a Tim Holtz project, it involves tons of different products - distress inks, crayons, alcohol ink, dies, and Ideology items. I hope everyone will like it and have fun making it.
